Artist and Photographer

Susan MacLennan

I believe the western landscape and its wildlife is what sustains us, but also feed our souls. Art and photography capture a moment in time that can live in our imaginations forever. Through my work I wish to encourage others to value and protect our natural world for future generations.

Susan MacLennan is a retired educator (B.A, Bed.) artist and photographer from the Foothills of Alberta. Her passion for wilderness and wildlife have taken her from our Rockies to Alaska to the Pyrenees – often on horseback. Her work in watercolour and acrylic is inspired by nature, who teaches us everything about light, colour and form.

She uses bold colours and simple shapes in the southwest tradition called representational realism. She is forever experimental, loving the creative process, and attends workshops hosted by other artists to try new mediums, such as mixing photography with printmaking. She is inspired by colourists such as Ted Harrison, Lawren Harris, Norval Morrisseau, and Jason Carter. Her mantra is from Horace: “A picture is a poem without words.”

Susan’s photography has been awarded by the Calgary Stampede Int’l Photography Competition, published in the Globe and Mail, and shortlisted for the World Photographic Cup 2026. She is represented by Route 22 Gallery, Cochrane, AB, and the Leighton Art Centre (Festive Foothills Art Show), Millarville, AB, and Art Spot, Calgary AB. All photographic prints are original, and in limited editions of 250. They are available on canvas, acrylic, metal and fine art papers, using archival inks.

The intersection where art, culture and community converge.
Route 22 Gallery is located on the land of the Treaty 7 people. In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we honour and acknowledge the Treaty 7 territory and the cultural and oral practices of the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations as well as the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, (Métis Nation District 4) within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. It is a privilege and and an honour to share these lands as our collective home. Route 22 Artist Collective Gallery is an inclusive organization. We love our community and all are welcome here.
