Photography has always been a way for me to connect with the landscapes I love. While I focus on the technical side of capturing an image, I also try to bring in a creative and thoughtful perspective – so it’s not just about what the place looks like, but how it feels. I aim to create images that feel contemplative and reflective, giving people a chance to connect with nature in a more personal way.
Originally from Ireland and now based in Cochrane, near the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Dermot O’Kane is a fine art landscape photographer whose work explores the emotional connection between people and place. With a background in philosophy and classics, his approach to photography is grounded in curiosity, meaning, and reflection.
He has photographed extensively across Canada and around the world, seeking to create images that are not only visually striking but also contemplative – evoking the feeling of a landscape as much as its form. His early work involved panoramic film systems such as the Hasselblad Xpan and Linhof Technorama 617, using Fuji Velvia film. He now works digitally with a high-resolution Sony mirrorless system, producing large-format prints of exceptional quality.
His images have earned numerous accolades, including a National Accreditation in Fine Art from the Professional Photographers of Canada, a Kodak Gallery Award, and the title of Master Photographer in Fine Art from Master Photographers International.
Whether working with film or digital, his goal remains the same: to create quiet, thoughtful photographs that offer viewers a deeper connection to the natural world.
