Much of my artistic outlook stems from the books I read as a child: Mad magazine, Dr. Suess, and Gris Grimly. Their whimsical and yet brilliant understanding of character gave me great joy to escape into their fantasy worlds and wonder what fun they must have had in illustrating their stories.
In my driftwood sculptures, I love to mix materials and try to entice that which lies beneath the surface to come alive. Perhaps those that stop to look, can build their own stories by using their own imaginations.
My pencil, my favorite art tool, has taken a break as of late, due to the fact that at the moment I am engrossed in playing and making my art fun again. Detailed pencil work may one day resurface when I need to switch gears and visit my comfort zone again. Yet again, I will play.
Susan Lindsay’s education blended a BFA in Industrial Design and Drawing with a BEd specializing in Secondary Art. Her furniture designs have been seen at Calgary’s Triangle Gallery, and her aluminum-and-maple coffee table was displayed at the Table + Lamp + Chair exhibit in Portland, OR (1994). Her first published photo appeared in The Windmills of Wonder by the International Library of Photography (2003). The Lougheed Centre held a show in 2019 featuring Susan’s paintings, and her most recent exhibit of mixed-media art was at Route 22 as a joint exhibitor in the 4D Kaleidoscope show (Sept. 2025).
Acting, singing, and dancing in major musicals—Mamma Mia! (2019) and Chicago (2020)—were a fun sidestep in the art realm, and she also designed and built stage pieces for Les Misérables (2018) and The Sound of Music (2019).
She loves to craft at home, designing and sewing clothes, as well as knitting and refinishing furniture. She makes her own jewellery and also sells her revamped clothing on Etsy. Susan is always reinventing herself and, by doing so, continues creating in multiple facets of art.
Susan is an avid art and chair collector, with pieces ranging from antique to Mid-Century to modern.
