Painter

Sophia McCulloch

My work explores people, identity, and nuance. Working primarily in gouache and acrylic, I’m inspired by both the beauty of creation and the artists who challenge me to see more deeply. Through painting, I hope to invite conversation about the meaning behind different symbols and where people find their purpose.

Sophia McCulloch is an emerging artist originally from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, now based in Cochrane, Alberta. Raised in a loving Christian community, she developed an appreciation for people, relationships, and the beauty of creation—values that continue to shape both her life and artistic practice.
Working primarily in gouache and acrylic, Sophie explores themes of identity, human expression, metaphors and allusions. She draws inspiration from artists such as Ben Fenske and Pan Inkhoo, whose approaches to expressive portraiture and bold, vibrant colour encourage her to paint with greater intention and curiosity.
Sophia is currently entering her second year at Redeemer University in Ancaster, Ontario, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Art and English Literature. Alongside her university studies, she continues to learn from the vibrant artistic community in Cochrane and is grateful for every opportunity to grow as both an artist and creative thinker.
Her work has been featured in the 28th Annual Youth ArtWalk, and she was selected as a Top 30 finalist in the Calgary Stampede Youth Poster Competition. She has also completed a mural for Bodenseehof Bible School in Germany. Looking ahead, Sophia hopes to pursue a career in museum curation, where she can continue sharing her love of art and creating meaningful connections through visual storytelling.

The intersection where art, culture and community converge.
Route 22 Gallery is located on the land of the Treaty 7 people. In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we honour and acknowledge the Treaty 7 territory and the cultural and oral practices of the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations as well as the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, (Métis Nation District 4) within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. It is a privilege and and an honour to share these lands as our collective home. Route 22 Artist Collective Gallery is an inclusive organization. We love our community and all are welcome here.
