“Light can transform something ordinary into something extraordinary”
In my paintings I want to capture the moment where light brings a scene to life. With any subject matter it is always the light that inspires me. I paint with acrylic paints, and I use acrylic medium with my paints so they become transparent. I paint in layers, usually on canvas, starting with warm transparent colours and finishing with more opaque cooler colours. This technique lets me capture the light I’m interested in and when my paintings are lit, they glow with light.
I usually paint landscapes and my favorite subjects are the Rocky Mountains. I paint on location and I also paint from photographs that I take. Even when I don’t finish my plein air scenes, the experience helps me better interpret the photograph. I feel fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the world and that’s what I hope to communicate to the viewers.
I also enjoy painting florals. I often work on my flowers in the winter because I crave seeing colour. The floral paintings help satisfy that craving. The same layering technique works well with florals and they also glow when lit.
I paint figures now and then but they are usually part of the landscape rather than a subject on their own.
My work tends to be quite realistic. People have told me that my paintings have a clean look. I’m quite a messy person so maybe my art is where things can be tidy. I don’t over think it any more. It’s just how my art turns out.
I have loved drawing and painting since I was a young girl and I never get bored or tired of it.
