Chalk Pastel Painting w/ Marla Blackwell

Course Description: Pastel is the most pure, immediate, easy to use medium that will outlive oils, acrylics and any other materials. And if you handle it right, it will create the most luminous paintings. Join artist Marla Blackwell for an inspiring art workshop focused on exploring the wonderful world of pastels. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out, this workshop is designed to enhance your skills and ignite your creativity.

What Students will Learn:

  • How to layer pastels and see gorgeous luminous colours come through.
  • Various techniques and approaches for working with pastels
  • Understanding the different types of pastels and their unique properties
  • How to create vibrant textured and expressive work

Student Supplies:

  • Notebook and pen
  • Water bottle and lunch
  • Pastel paper
  • a collection of chalk pastels
  • erasers
  • Kleenex tissues
  • wet wipes
  • tape
  • board to tape pastel paper to
  • reference sources either printed or on a tablet. Please don’t paint from a phone as it is too small.
  • Marla will have some pastel paper for sale at class too.

Instructor Bio: Marla Blackwell, a talented artist hailing from Southern Alberta, Canada, found her artistic muse in the breathtaking landscapes of the foothills and tree-filled regions around Calgary. Born and raised amidst the prairie and grain fields, Marla’s deep connection to nature is evident in her vibrant paintings. Marla Blackwell’s artistic journey is not only about capturing the beauty of the landscapes that surround her, but also about weaving together a story of connection and shared experiences. With each brushstroke, she seeks to ignite a sense of wonder and a renewed appreciation for the world we inhabit.
