Title: Cyanotype and Photograms
Type of Course: 1 Day Workshop
Dates: May 4th, 2024
Running Time: 10:30am – 4:30pm
Audience: 1 Day Workshop
Course Description: Create beautifully detailed prints by exposing virtually any object to the sun.
Join our immersive full-day workshop to learn about cyanotype, one of the first alternative photographic processes. You will design, expose and develop your photograms and cyanotypes using plants, photographic negatives and other personal objects. Discover the magic of this exciting and sometimes unpredictable sun printing medium. The outcome will be a selection of beautiful prints in monochromatic Prussian blue ready for framing, quilting or integrated into mixed media art.
What Students will Learn:
- Properly mix the solutions for cyanotype.
- Expose and develop your prints.
- Select plants and objects for beautiful results.
- Add texture and discoloration.
- Design your prints.
Student Supplies:
- Notebook and pen
- Water bottle
- Objects for printing – plants, leaves, flowers, feathers, string, interesting shapes, translucent items, patterned items, etc.
- Watercolour paper (you can cut large sheets to whatever variety of sizes you’d like to work with – make sure it fits in your tub) bring approximately 20 sheets of paper.
- Rubbermaid or plastic container large enough to fit your paper.
- Soft paintbrush – about 2 inches wide (I use a Hake brush, but any 2” soft brush will work)
- Thick black plastic garbage bag (to cover your paper during processing)
- Glass or acrylic slightly larger than your paper (you can pull this from a cheap frame)
- A support similar in size to the glass (this can be the back of a cheap frame, MDF or something sturdy to use for transporting/processing sheets of paper)
- Bulldog clips x 4
OPTIONAL:
- Jacquard Cyanotype Sensitizer Set
- Digitally printed photographic negative (an inverted black and white photo laser or inkjet-printed onto a transparency) – Gloria will bring plenty of samples.
