Description: Haiga is a style of Japanese imagery that incorporates the aesthetics of Haiku poetry and are based on simple, yet often profound, observations of the everyday world. Traditionally, Haiga were painted and accompanied by a haiku poem. In this class we will explore a modern interpretation this art form through photography. Students will explore both image creation as well as be lead through the writing process for creating Haiku poems that will deepen the experience of observing their photographs. Students will meet at Route 22 Gallery and then travel to Cochrane Ranche for the outdoor component.
What Students will Learn:
• Learn the history and art of Haiga.
• Develop skills in writing Haiku poetry.
• Explore photographic compositional elements of light, subject, simplicity.
• Make photographs and review those images in the context of Haiga art.
• Create a series of Haiga photographs and Haiku.
Student Supplies :
• Any type of camera (phone cameras are okay)
• Notebook and pen
• Water bottle and lunch
• Weather appropriate shoes and clothing
Instructor Bios :
Jim Force (Nika), Ph. D. a retired educator whose focus and interest was outdoor and experiential education, writes under the pen name, Nika. He is a member of Haiku Canada and the Haiku Society of America. His main interest is in collaborating with photographers in creating haiga. His haiku have been widely published in journals and anthologies both in North America and abroad. He has published two chapbooks: frogs singing (1993) and snail my friend (2015).
Barry Allen is a passionate photographer whose goal is to experience the moment and capture the magic in the world around him. Having spent many years as an educator and professional learning specialist, Barry encourages students and educators to evaluate and share learning with photographs, photo essays, storytelling, and digital stories.
