Karen Chaisson

Painter / Wire Sculptor

I approach my artwork through a combination of inspiration and intuition. My paintings and sculptures express the relationship between individuals and individual moments that inspire me. The beauty, complexities and wonder of nature and landscape, people and places where I live and visit; the color, shapes and texture, light and shadow that I encounter each day are the source of my inspiration.

Each piece may start with an initial plan or sketch, but it is during the process of discovery and exploration where the most successful and engaging works can happen. Oil is rich with color, opaque, luminous, full of texture. Adding Cold Wax creates more layers of texture and allows beautiful brush strokes to depict a form or object. Acrylic is fast drying and enables the quick layers of texture and color. Wire is tangible and physically demanding at times but allows the representational beauty of the line to appear depicting this structural form.

To evoke a memory, a thought, an emotion with the viewer is a delight and inspires me to continue to create, and to share.

I was born in Banff, Alberta, grew up in Southern Ontario and returned to Alberta in 1991. I currently work from my home studio in Cochrane, Alberta.

Route 22 Gallery is located on the land of the Treaty 7 people. In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we honour and acknowledge the Treaty 7 territory and the cultural and oral practices of the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations as well as the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, (Métis Nation District 4) within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. It is a privilege and and an honour to share these lands as our collective home.
