I graduated from The Alberta College of Art (now Alberta University of the Arts) in 1981 with a major in painting and drawing and then attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design where I earned a BFA in studio practice with a focus on printmaking. Like most artists I’ve had careers to support my artistic practice. I spent 16 years working as a scenic painter and props-maker for film, TV and theatre and, I also spent two – four fire season stints, living and working alone as a fire lookout in the Rocky Mountains. I became a full-time artist when I left lookout life in 2019.
In 2020 I started to have frequent dreams of paintings I’d dreamt I’d painted. Most of my current works are progressions from initial dreamt paintings. The first “Land and Sky” painting is, I believe, a distillation of memories of geographic/geological and atmospheric exposures/experiences I’ve had from many years working and playing in the foothills and Rockies. My “Land and Sky” series represent impressions of moments in the landscape as processed through memory over time.
My other work is often heavily dream influenced. Some paintings are directly from dreams and others begin as flashes of imagery that come to me in those moments between sleep and waking. Like dreams, my work is open to interpretation, what I see in my work is based on my experience, and what the viewer brings influences what they find in my work.
I teach art to adults. My work is found in private collections.
